Factors Associated with Motorcycle Riding Accident Prevention Behaviors among Humanities and Social Sciences Students at Mahasarakham University

Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to investigate the factors related to accident prevention behaviors in motorcycle riding among students in the Humanities and Social Sciences group at Mahasarakham University. The sample consisted of 380 students selected from a total population of 29,090 students. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. The statistical methods used included descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and inferential statistics using the Chi-square test at a significance level of 0.05.

The results revealed that most participants were female (67.1%) and aged 20 years or older (63.4%). The majority were first-year students (27.6%), with an average monthly income of 4,000–6,000 baht (58.2%). Among the respondents, 37.1% did not have a driving license, while 62.9% possessed one. More than half (59.5%) had previously experienced a motorcycle accident, most commonly due to self-caused falls (34.5%). In terms of related factors, most students demonstrated a high level of knowledge (53.4%), a good attitude toward accident prevention (62.4%), a high level of access to information (57.9%), and strong social support (65.8%). Overall, 60.3% of students exhibited good accident prevention behaviors.

The analysis showed significant relationships between demographic factors and accident prevention behaviors, particularly gender (p < 0.001) and possession of a driving license (p < 0.001). Furthermore, significant positive correlations were found between accident prevention behaviors and knowledge (r = 0.245), attitude (r = 0.350), access to information (r = 0.401), and social support (r = 0.495) at the 0.01 level.
