Factors Associated with Motorcycle Riding Accident Prevention Behaviors among Health Sciences Students at Mahasarakham University

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the factors associated with accident prevention behaviors among motorcycle-riding students in the Health Sciences group at Mahasarakham University. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed. Data were collected using an online questionnaire (Google Form) from a sample of 359 students. The instrument was validated for content validity (IOC) and demonstrated a reliability coefficient of 0.87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient).

The results revealed that most respondents were female, aged 20 years and older (59.3%), first-year students (30.6%), with an average monthly income of 4,000–6,000 Baht (60.2%). The majority possessed a motorcycle driving license (62.4%) and had previous accident experience (57.9%), mainly caused by self-falling motorcycle accidents (34.8%). Most participants had a high level of knowledge about accident prevention (53.2%), a positive attitude (65.5%), high access to accident prevention information (61.8%), and high social support (68.2%). Overall, their accident prevention behaviors were found to be at a good level (64.9%).

Correlation analysis indicated that gender (p < 0.001) and possession of a driving license (p < 0.015) were significantly associated with accident prevention behaviors. Among the predisposing factors, knowledge showed a low positive correlation (r = 0.245, p < 0.01), and attitude demonstrated a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.365, p < 0.01). For enabling factors, access to information was moderately correlated (r = 0.410, p < 0.01), while reinforcing factors—social support—had a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.471, p < 0.01)
