บทความวิชาการนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการให้ความรู้เกี่ยวกับความเป็นส่วนตัวของข้อมูล ซึ่งความเป็นส่วนตัวของข้อมูล นั้น
เกี่ยวข้องกับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการรวบรวมและการเผยแพร่ ข้อมูล เทคโนโลยี ความคาดหวังของประชาชนเกี่ยวกับ
ความเป็นส่วนตัวและความรู้เกี่ยวกับกฎหมายความเป็นส่วนตัว โดยเกี่ยวข้องกับกฎระเบียบการจัดเก็บและการใช้ ข้อมูลส่วนบุคคล ข้อมูลด้านสุขภาพส่วนบุคคลและข้อมูลทางการเงินของบุคคล ซึ่งรัฐบาล องค์กรเอกชน หรือบุคคลอื่นสามารถรวบรวมได้ และยังหมายถึงข้อมูลใช้ในภาคธุรกิจเช่นความลับทางการค้า เพื่อเป็นการป้องกันปัญหาเรื่องความเป็นส่วนตัวของข้อมูลรั่วไหลสหภาพยุโรปจึงได้ออกกฎหมายการคุ้มครองข้อมูลส่วนบุคคล เรียกว่า “GDPR” (EU General Data Protection Regulation--GDPR) เพื่อกำหนดให้องค์กรต่าง ๆ ต้องมีมาตรการรักษาความปลอดภัยของข้อมูลที่จัดเก็บไว้ ซึ่งประเทศไทยได้นำกฎหมายนี้มาเป็นแนวทางสำหรับออกเป็นกฎหมายเพื่อการคุ้มครองข้อมูลส่วนบุคคลของประชาชนในประเทศเรียกว่า “พระราชบัญญัติคุ้มครองข้อมูลส่วนบุคคล พ.ศ. 2562” และอธิบายแนวทางการปฏิบัติให้กับองค์กรและเจ้าของข้อมูลซึ่งสอดคล้องกับพระราชบัญญัติคุ้มครองข้อมูลส่วนบุคคล
