The Experiences of Self-Management in Dietary Practices among Diabetic Patients with Poor Glycemic Control

Abstract
This descriptive research aimed to explore the lived experiences of dietary self-management among type 2 diabetes patients with uncontrolled blood glucose levels. The key informants were 15 type 2 diabetes patients with uncontrolled blood glucose levels, purposively selected according to predetermined criteria from the catchment area of the 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit Health Station, Ngiuongam, Mueang Uttaradit District, Uttaradit Province. The research instruments consisted of the researcher who had been trained in qualitative research techniques and data collection tools including a semi-structured interview guide with [specify number] items covering [specify topic areas] that was validated for content validity by three experts. The researcher incorporated the recommendations for revision and piloted the interview with five diabetes patients from a Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital who had characteristics similar to the key informants. An audio recorder [specify brand and model, with verification of proper functioning] was also used. Data were collected through in-depth interviews lasting 45-60 minutes. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis.
The research findings revealed that key informants had experiences with dietary self-management. Data from the interviews comprised six main themes: Main Theme 1: Unclear goal setting; Main Theme 2: Unsystematic information gathering; Main Theme 3: Health assessment based on feelings; Main Theme 4: Social and cultural influences on decision-making; Main Theme 5: Dietary intake conflicting with intentions; and Main Theme 6: Learning and adaptation from experiences. These research findings can be applied as guidelines for nursing practice in dietary care for diabetes patients with uncontrolled blood glucose levels and for developing appropriate dietary behavior self-management promotion programs for diabetes patients effectively.
