Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare the average stress scores of nursing students before, after and follow up between an experimental group and a control group, after receiving a program to enhance problem-solving skills for nursing students.        The participants were nursing students studying in one of the Boromarajonani colleges of nursing under the jurisdiction of the Praboromarajchanok Institute in Thailand during academic year 2023. The method of selecting the sample group bases on students with moderate to high-stress levels and low problem-solving skills who voluntarily agreed to participate were recruited. Fifty-two students were randomly assigned into the experimental group 26 students and the control group 26 students. The instruments consisted of                1) personal information questionnaire; 2) the Problem-Solving Inventory with a reliability coefficient of 0.82; 3) the Stress Test of Nursing Students questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.98; and   4) the Problem-Solving Skills Enhancement Program on Stress of Nursing Students validated by six experts with a content validity index of 0.92. The program was tested with nursing students who had similar characteristics to those in the study sample. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and repeated one-way ANOVA.

Results of the research revealed that: 1) The mean score for stress of nursing students after receiving the Problem-Solving Skills Enhancement Program for two 2 weeks and one month was statistically significantly less than before the intervention, at the level of

.05.  2) The mean score of nursing students in the experimental group after receiving the Problem-Solving Skills Enhancement Program for two weeks and one month was statistically significantly less than those who received routine care, at the level of .05.

The results demonstrated that the Problem-Solving Skills Enhancement Program could effectively enhance problem-solving abilities and reduce stress of nursing students. Therefore, this program should be implemented to mitigate stress among this population.
