Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this participatory action research was to develop a model of the local community potential in managing food and nutrition systems for promoting preschool and school-age children’s nutrition using community participation. Subjects were 240 preschool and primary school grades 1-3 in 4 provinces. The 120 key informants included persons from 1) local administrative organization, 2) Sub-District Health Promoting Hospital, 3) primary school and child development center, and 4) public sector. Research instruments werethe focus group discussion questions, a fruit and vegetable consumption record form, and a nutritional assessment form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test and content analysis.
The results revealed that: 1. A model of the potential of a local community to manage food and nutrition system to promote community nutrition had 7 components: 1) studying the situation of community nutrition problems; 2) setting the goals and needs of the community; 3) studying social capital within a local food system; 4) establishing networking by knowledge sharing and communication strategies ; 5) drafting sub-district development plan for food and nutrition by all sectors; 6) performing network development activities following the Ottawa Charter health promotion principles; and 7) the result was a sub-district model of food and nutrition management in the community.
2. After the implementation, it was found that preschool and school-age children had increased fruit and vegetable consumption at a statistical significance of .05 and weight-for-age decreased with statistical significance at the .05
Conclusion: a subdistrict model of food and nutrition management in the community is an effective model for changing nutritional management behaviors
