Factors Affecting the Adjustment of Students at a Higher Education Institution During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed at exploring adjustment and identifying factors affecting the student adjustment. The samples consisted of 129 students by using a computer with simple randomization from Eastern Rajamangala University of Technology Bang Phra Campus, registered during the academic year 2021 to 2022. Data were collected by using the COVID-19Adjustment Questionnaire, the COVID-19Knowledge Questionnaire, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Questionnaire, Resilience Quotient, and the duration of perceiving information about COVID-19. Data were analyzed by means, percentage, standard deviation, and the factors affecting student adjustment were analyzed by multiple regression analysis and input variables with using enter method.


The results revealed that overall students of Eastern Rajamangala University of Technology Bang Phra Campus, were able to adjust themselves during the outbreak of COVID-19 with an average of 3.88 at a high level (SD = .545). Their knowledge of COVID-19 had average (Mean) of 9.18, at a high level (SD=1.558), multidimensional scale of perceived social support with an average of 4.65, at a quite high level (SD = 1.656). Their resilience was an average of 2.89, at a moderate level (SD = .470). Time duration spending on receiving information about COVID-19 with an average of 50.49 minutes per day. Factors affecting student adjustment, at Eastern Rajamangala University of Technology Bang Phra Campus, which could predict the student adaptation included the student’s knowledge of COVID-19 (β=.261), the multidimensional scale of perceived social support factor (β=.219), and the willpower factor (β=-.179). They could predict the adaptation of students at Eastern Rajamangala University of Technology Bang Phra Campus got 15.3% (Adjust R2 =.153, p < .001).


 The results of this study suggested that institution should organize activities to promote knowledge about COVID-19 and create and enhance awareness and social support from friends, instructors, and families of close friends to encourage students to be able to adapt appropriately in all aspects.
