Abstract

This descriptive comparative research aimed to compare the level of health literacy and health behavior of hypertensive patients with controllable and uncontrollable blood pressure level. The sample group included 92 hypertensive patients by simple random sampling. The sample were divided into the controllable blood pressure level group and the uncontrollable blood pressure level group, 46 person per group, who were treated at the Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital in Phayao Province. The instruments for collecting data were questionnaires of health literacy and behaviors of hypertensive patient checklist that have Cronbach’s alpha values .92 and .87 respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive and Independent t-test.

The results showed that the subjects with controlled blood pressure had high levels of both health literacy and behaviors (𝑥̅= 108.07 SD=12.15 and 𝑥̅ = 43.87 SD=2.75 respectively), while participants with uncontrolled blood pressure had low levels of health literacy (𝑥̅ = 90.11, SD=12.36) and moderate levels of health behaviors (𝑥̅ = 33.32 SD=4.96). Comparing the differences in health literacy and health behaviors of the two groups, it was found that there were statistically significant differences in health literacy and health behaviors (t=7.03, p≤.000 and t=12.61, p≤.000, respectively).

Suggestions from the research found that the health care providers should promote health literacy and health behavior programs for hypertensive patients in order to maintain appropriate blood pressure control.
