Abstract

Anemia can increase mortality rate of both mother and fetus together with increase risks of abortion, stillbirth, premature delivery, and low birth weight. The aim of this retrospective study is to explore the effects of anemia during pregnancy and the association between conditions during antenatal care and postpartum and neonatal complications of the women attending antenatal program at Uthaithanee Hospital for developing a nursing care program for pregnant women. Data were collected from medical records, antenatal care records, and maternity care records of Uthaithanee Hospital between 1st October 2014 and 30th September 2017. Methodology: This study is a retrospective descriptive study. The sample size of 88 patients was calculated using G* Power Program. The analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses.

Results: From the total of 1,375 patients, 88 patients were anemic (6.40%) which were mostly young adults under the age of 20 (61.36%). The postpartum complication (Postpartum Hemorrhage) was found in six patients (6.82%) while the neonatal complication was not experienced. Age of pregnant woman and gestational age were found to be statistically significant factors (p<.05). This study indicated that prevalence and risk factors of anemia in pregnant women should be taken into consideration in antenatal program. Beneficially, a proactive health care among reproductive-age women by promoting knowledge and practice was a crucial factor to reduce the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women.
