Nurse-Midwife Role: Anxiety Management of Pregnant Women about Amniocentesis
Main Article Content
Abstract
Anxiety is a common among pregnant women, but it can typically be managed independently. However, there are still a number of pregnant women at risk for prenatal abnormalities that can have severe consequences for the fetus. Consequently, both an accurate diagnosis and standard care must be provided. To ensure a diagnosis between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy, it is necessary to puncture the amniotic fluid of pregnant women at risk for a fetal anomaly prior to labor. Amniocentesis can badly affect the health of the fetus due to complications including leaking amniotic fluid and increased risk of fetal injury, miscarriage, and infection. It can also affect the mental health of pregnant women through anxiety prior to, during, and after the procedure. Therefore, the midwife is had to play a role in health education and instruction in the development of plans to address the mental state, especially when complications arise during or after amniocentesis. Furthermore, midwives can be advantageous in assisting pregnant women to manage anxiety
