Abstract

This study is a descriptive phenomenological approach. The purpose of this study is to describe primary caregivers’ experiences in caregiving for older family members with bedridden at home. Twelve participants were recruited using purposive sampling. They were interviewed through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Transcriptions from audio recordings were analyzed using Giorgi’s method.

The findings revealed that experiences of primary caregivers during the care for older family members with bedridden at home included: 1) tasks of caregiving; 2) feelings of caregiving; 3) health problems; 4) sources of support; and 5) needs to be supported. Primary caregivers played various tasks to assist older people with bedridden regarding daily activity care and health management for older people. They felt happy in caregiving for older people, and it was grateful to the benefactor. Although they felt tired and discouraged, they had to be patient in taking care of their older people. During the care of older people, they perceived that they had physical and mental health problems such as back pain, insufficient sleep, and anxiety about older person’s symptoms. However, they were supported by nurses, healthcare volunteers, and their relatives. Furthermore, the internet was used to search for data to improve knowledge and competency in assisting older people. Additionally, they needed to be supported by the medical team to visit their older people with bedridden. Meanwhile, they needed to be supported by relatives and some organizations concerning expenses in providing care for older people. Moreover, they needed moral support from their relatives.

The findings of this qualitative research can be basic data to develop quantitative research and mixed-method research regarding caregivers of older people with bedridden. For instance, the competency development program for caregivers in managing health problems of bedridden older people in emergency situations, a model of managing health problems for caregivers of older people with bedridden, and guidelines in developing networks to provide care for older people and families using technologies and community engagement.
