Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to explore the effect of a self-management program on blood pressure level and self-management behaviors among elderly. Elderly aged 60 years old or older had hypertension and lived in Muang district, Uttaradit Province were recruited. A total of sixty elderly participants were divided into two groups with 30 participants in each group.  The experimental group had received care using a self-management program of Lorig and Holman’s self-management concept. The control group received a standard care for 12 weeks. The instruments of research were a self-management program, a teaching plan, and a self-management behavior manual.  The Index of Item-Objective Congruency (IOC) was validated yielding a value of .88, .80 and .83, respectively. The reliability of a self-management behavior questionnaire was tested using Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient yielding a value of .921. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Two-way repeated measurement  ANOVA and multiple comparison.   Results as follow:

1) The experimental group had significantly higher mean scores after the experiment using self-management behavior after week 7th and week 12th than before the experiment (p<.05). The experimental group had a significantly lower mean score of blood pressure level after week 7th and week 12th  lower than before the experiment (p<.05)

2) Blood pressure level of the experimental group had significantly lower mean scores than the control group (p<.05). However, these analyses were not possible to compare a mean score of a self-management behavior

The findings revealed that the self-management program can improve the health status in elderly with hypertension to change their health behaviors contributing to reduction of blood pressure
