Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL), the self- directed learning, is a small group teaching method to develop deep knowledge for problem solving. The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was: 1) to study the problem solving abilities after studying by using PBL, 2) to compare the critical thinking between pre-study and post study and 3) to study the opinion and satisfaction of nursing students after studying by using PBL. 114 of 2nd year nursing students that studying in nursing care of persons with health problems I was included in this study. The instruments were 1) problem solving in nursing care test 2) the critical thinking assessment and 3) the opinion and satisfaction in PBL questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage and paired t-test. The results found that:

          1. The problem solving abilities of nursing students were in the middle level percentage 48.24  and high level percentage 3.51. After studying by using PBL, the problem solving abilities of nursing students were higher than lecture with statistical significant at the level of .05 (p<.05).

2.After studying by using PBL, the critical thinking of nursing students were higher with statistical significant at the level of .01 (p<.01).

3.The students had satisfaction in PBL because it promoted problem solving abilities in nursing care, team work, exchanging their knowledge, having deep knowledge and stress induces learning.

This study shows that PBL is one choice to develop the 21th century skills of nursing students.
