Development of Mental Health Literacy Indicators for the Public

Abstract

          The purposes of this research were to synthesize the indicators of mental health literacy indicators for the public and to validate the evaluation model. The samples consisted of 960 participants including people age 15 and above in Lampang province. The multi-stage random sampling technique was used. The research instrument was a questionnaire on mental health literacy. Data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis using LISREL 8.72.


The results of the study were as follows:


1. The mental health literacy indicators for the public. consisted of three factors and 48 indicators. The factors include: 1) Knowledge about mental health and mental disorders consisted of 15 indicators 2) Beliefs about mental health and mental disorders consisted of 12 indicators 3) Abilities to recognize, prevention and management of mental health problems consisted of 21 indicators.


2. The quality of mental health literacy evaluation model fitted with empirical data was found as the Chi square = 1954.66, df = 1060, p = .0421, GFI = 0.94, AGFI = 0.93, RMR = 0.04, RMSEA=0.013. The highest four factors loading were 1) express the feelings/explain the changing symptoms to health professional, 2) available of accessing 1323 - mental health hotline, 3) the nearest community mental health service is the Sub - district Health Promoting Hospital and 4) suicidal idea is normal life situation.
