Abstract

Breastfeeding is beneficial to mothers and children’s physical, psychological, and emotional.
Female inmates, especially pregnant women who gave birth to a baby while staying in prison, were a
vulnerable group. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understanding breastfeeding experiences
in female inmates at Suphanburi Prison Province.A purposive sampling were three groups of prison
mothers. Each group composed of 4 women who experienced breastfeeding within the past 3 years Data
collection were focus group discussion. The data were analyzed by using content analysis.
The results were divided into two main themes which were personal experiences of mothers
and the environmental importance. There were three subthems including 1) expectation and practices in
breastfeeding, 2) service facilities for encouraging brestfeeding, and 3) health care providers’ support to
promote breasfeeding. The female inmates felt positively to breastfeeding but having limitation, rules
and regulations, and facilities that were obstacles and different from other mothers living outside the
prison to breastfed their babies. These findings will be a guideline for stakeholders in improving services
for mothers and children’s quality of life
