Pneumonia is a leading cause of death in children aged under five years. Having health literacy, a parent knows how to reduce the incidence of pneumonia. This research was a cross-sectional analytical study. The objectives were to study health literacy, pneumonia prevention behavior, and the relationship between health literacy and pneumonia prevention behavior among parents. Multistage random sampling was used to recruit a sample of 173 people who were parents with children aged under five years and lived in Mueang District, Yala Province. The research instrument was a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient.
The results revealed that the samples’ health literacy was at a moderate level (M=1.98, S.D.=.76). Their pneumonia prevention behavior was moderate (M=2.00, S.D.=.36). The health literacy was found to be moderately related to pneumonia prevention behavior (r=.639, p<.001).
Healthcare personnel or relevant agencies should use the research results as a guideline for the development activities to promote health literacy and pneumonia prevention among parents, especially raising awareness of the causes and spread of pneumonia among parents and promoting breastfeeding among working mothers.
