Structural Equation Modeling of Factors Affecting Intellectual Skills of Students in the Bachelor of Nursing Science Programs of the Southern Nursing College Network Under Praboromarajchanok Institute
Keywords:
Structural Equation Model, Intellectual Skills, Nursing StudentsAbstract
This descriptive research aimed to test the congruence between empirical data and a structural equation model supposingly affecting the intellectual skills of nursing science students. Study was conducted in the Southern Network of Nursing Colleges under Praboromarajanok Institute. The research had two phases: creating a structural equation model, and testing the congruences between the structural equations of factors affecting intellectual skills. The subjects were 440 fourth-year nursing students in the academic year 2021, selected using multi-stage sampling. The instrument was a Likert-scale questionnaire. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of each aspect of the instrument was between .91-.96. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient, and the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).
The results revealed that the model was in congruence with the empirical data (chi-square square=188.52, df=160, p=.06, Relative Chi-Square=1.18, GFI=.96, NFI=.98, TLI=.99, CFI=.99, RMSEA=.02, and RMR=.01).The predictor coefficient of intellectual skills was .80, and the variable with a direct positive influence was teaching and learning management. The variable with direct and indirect influences was the learners, and the variables with indirect positive influence were the teaching and learning environments, teachers, and family. The variable with the highest influence on intellectual skills was the teaching and learning environments, followed by learners and teaching and learning management with the total effect sizes of .66, .54, and .50, respectively.
Therefore, in order to promote students’ intellectual skills, the development should be focused on the factors of learners, teaching and learning management, family, learning and teaching environments, and teachers.
