Abstract

This action research study aimed to develop a problem-based learning application in teaching the nursing process with measurable pedagogic results in terms of learning outcomes. Twelve nursing instructors and 129 nursing students in the 2nd year participated in this study. The research instruments were the following: 1) an evaluation form, 2) an essay question test, and, 3) a reflection questionnaire. Content validity of the instruments was validated by three experts, yielding a score of .84. Reliability of the instruments was tested using the inter-rater reliability method, with a result of 0.81. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and content analysis. The problem-based learning application was divided into three simple phases: 1) to prepare everything before start learning; 2) to construct knowledge and develop competencies, step by step; and 3) to evaluate the learning outcomes.

Result showed that after using problem-based learning assessment, the mean scores for the dimension of continuously self-development responsibility was at the highest level (M=3.68, SD=0.50). The students’reflection expressed many concerns: knowing and understanding the nursing process; increasing systematic, analytical, and logical thinking, as well as searching capabilities; team work, developing confidence to comment, communicate clearly and effectively; take self-responsibility for analyzing their weaknesses and making improvements.  Supporting factors of learning by using problem-based learning were: supportive and instructive   teachers, students’level of preparation for learning. Barrier factors of learning by using problem-based learning were: time management and difference in using the teacher's questions.

The findings indicated that the problem-based learning should be applied as it can help students to achieve learning outcomes. Teachers should be trained to understand how to do the right approach in teaching before proceeding to make the teaching more effective.
