Abstract

This research and development study aimed to: 1) examine the current state and issues regarding concern for the public mind among nursing students, 2) develop a model for promoting concern among these students, and 3) evaluate the effectiveness of the developed model. The study was conducted in three phases. Phase 1 was an examination of current state and issues. The sample consisted of 248 nursing students. A questionnaire was used to collect opinions on the current state and issues. Phase 2 was a model development. This phase was divided into two sub-steps: a) a workshop with nine experts to draft the model and b) a seminar with nine experts to validate and refine the model. Phase 3 was the model evaluation. A public hearing seminar with 30 participants was conducted to assess the feasibility and benefits of the model. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. The research results were as follows.

1. In terms of the current state of concern for public-minded, overall, the level of public-minded behavior was at a high level (M = 4.39, SD = 0.64). The most prominent aspect was nursing professional identity (M = 4.54, SD = 0.61). The most significant issue identified was the lack of student participation in solving social problems (26.56%).

2. The model for promoting public-minded characteristics consists of eight components: a) principles, b) objectives, c) inputs, d) promotion process, which includes four approaches (utilizing modern digital technology, role models from influential figures, positive motivation, and encouraging participation in social activities by learning through three key sources: classroom education, real-world practice, and community-based activities), e) outputs, f) outcomes, g) impact, and h) success  factors.

3. The model was found to be highly feasible and beneficial (M = 4.80, 77; SD = 0.37, 0.43).

Educational institutions and related organizations can apply this model to enhance the public-minded characteristics of nursing students in other Rajabhat universities. The model can be integrated into curricula and extracurricular activities to foster a greater sense of public responsibility among students.
