Abstract

The objective of this descriptive correlational research was to investigate correlations   between health literacy and health behavior among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The sample comprised of 74 individuals with upper gastrointestinal bleeding who were hospitalized in Roi-Et hospital, chosen by using simple random sampling and a random digit table. The instruments used for data collection were: 1) a general information record form, 2) an assessment of health literacy and 3) an assessment of health behaviors. The content validity index (CVI) for both questionnaires was 0.99.  The health literacy questionnaire comprised 6 dimensions with reliability coefficients of 0.93, 0.82, 0.82, 0.81, 0.88, and 0.81 respectively. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the health behavior questionnaire was 0.81. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results were as follows.

1. The mean score of health literacy among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding was at a fair level, with some correct behaviors (M = 61.34, SD = 12.62), while health behaviors were at a moderate level (M = 70.09, SD = 6.87).

2. The health literacy was a statistically significant moderate positive correlation with health behaviors among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (r = .340, p-value < .05).

In conclusion, the results of this research can be used as foundational data for promoting health behaviors among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and serve as data for future research aimed at promoting appropriate health behaviors among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
