The research and development aimed to create a model for the development of nursing skills in caring for head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy at the Cancer Hospital in Lopburi. The objectives were to compare the nursing skills of professional nurses in caring for head and neck cancer patients before and after implementing the nursing skills development model. The primary informants for group interviews were the interdisciplinary team and head and neck cancer patients who had undergone radiation therapy, totaling 10 individuals. The sample group for the model implementation consisted of 20 professional nurses. Research tools included interview guidelines for group discussions and an assessment form for nursing skills. Content validity index ranged from 0.67 to 1.00. Data analysis utilized descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results were as follows.
1. The model for development of nursing skills of professional nurses in caring for patients with Radiation therapy in head and neck cancer included: 1) developing skills in cancer knowledge regarding head and neck cancers, treating patients with head and neck cancer, as well as assessing the condition of patients and caring for those undergoing radiation therapy, and 2) developing nursing skills during radiation therapy caring for skin reaction, caring for xerostomia, caring for taste change, caring for oral mucositis, caring for trismus, as well as caring for ischemic and fibrosis.
2. Comparing the nursing skills of professional nurses in the care of head and neck cancer patients before and after using the developed nursing skill development model showed that the post-intervention nursing skills levels were significantly higher than the pre-intervention levels, with a statistical significance level of p< .001.
Therefore, hospitals and related organizations involved in cancer patient care can apply the nursing skills development model in caring for head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy to enhance the nursing skills of professional nurses involved in the care of patients with various types of cancers.
