Abstract

This pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research aimed to evaluate the effects of a gestational diabetes prevention program on the intention and behaviors to prevent gestational diabetes in overweight pregnant women. Participants consisted of 50 overweight pregnant women who received antenatal care services at Jainad Narendra Hospital from December 2020 to July 2021. Samples who met into the inclusion criteria were randomly selected into either experimental group (n = 25) and control group (n = 25). The new program was based on the theory of planned behavioral framework. Data were collected by using a self-administered intention questionnaire on preventing gestational diabetes as well as another on behaviors to prevent gestational diabetes with content validity index of 1.00 and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of .72 and .82, respectively. Data were  analyzed by using descriptive statistics, chi-square, fisher’s exact test, mann-whitney U, independent t-test, and dependent t-test

The results indicated that the experimental group had significantly higher mean score of intention for preventing gestational diabetes than those in the control group (t48 =7.53, p <.001). Additionally, the participants in the experimental group had significantly higher behaviors to prevent gestational diabetes than those in the control group (t48 =13.05, p <.001). Therefore, antenatal nurses should use this program to make pregnant women willing to change behaviors to prevent gestational diabetes and subsequent complications that affect both mother and baby.
