Abstract

This study aimed to describe and explain the experiences of 11 end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) during the Covid-19 pandemic situation. The descriptive phenomenological qualitative approach was used to conduct the study. Data were collected by using individual in-depth interviews. Colaizzi’s method was used to analyze the results. Trustworthiness was established by following Lincoln and Guba’s criteria.

The results showed seven thematic categories detailing the meaning of experience of ESRD patients  receiving HD during Covid-19 pandemic: 1) feeling discomfort related to reducing HD rounds,    2) feeling afraid of Covid-19 infection due to being in a higher-risk group, 3) encountering difficulties in accessing to HD,  4) spending a large amount of money to prevent infection, 5) changing behaviors to be safe from Covid-19, 6) receiving higher family support, and 7) preparing mentally if infected due to undergoing  HD.

ESRD patients receiving HD reflected on their experience as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic situation on their health, physical, and mental wellbeing, lifestyle and economic situation including self-management and support that helped patients adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic. The study finding can  be used to further develop nursing guidelines to support ESRD patients receiving HD a pandemic event or other emerging epidemics in the future.
