Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop an empowerment program among caregivers of children with learning disabilities (LD) and to try it out. The research process consisted of two phases. First one was to develop an empowerment program based on the conceptual framework of Miller (2000), related to literature review and results and qualitative data of caregivers’ experience with children with LD. Second phase was to try out the empowerment program with 15 participants. The program consisted of an empowerment program. Instrument for collecting data, besides the program itself, was a caring behavior questionnaire. Content validity of the empowerment program was verified by 5 experts. The instrument was tested for internal consistency by using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, yielding a value of .85. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed-ranks test.

The results showed that

1. The program consisted of 1) an empowerment program, 2) a caregiver’s manual, and 3) group activities of 90 minutes (two activities for each session, continually for six weeks).

2. after trying out the program, the median score of caregivers’ caring behaviors of children with LD were significantly higher than those before participating the program (z= -2.36, p=.009)

Therefore, the empowerment program could be increased power and caring behaviors’ caregivers of children with LD.
