Abstract

This research and development study aimed to generate a model of health promotion activities for the residents of a slum upgrading project in a Bangkok suburb, the Eua Athon Housing Project. The study was divided into 2 parts: phase 1 focused on the needs and elements that influenced people's health behaviors, and phase 2 was the model development. The target group was 440 residents of the Eua Arthorn Housing Project in Prachaniwet district of Nonthaburi province, and 20 related persons. Instruments used to collect data were a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Content validity was confirmed by 5 experts. Inferential statics were used for data analysis. And the results were as follows.

1. Needs of the target group were at a high level (40.68%) consisting of 3 main categories: 1) health-related needs, 2) environmental management needs, and 3) central management needs. The causal factors of health behavior included: 1) the predisposing factors, namely health care knowledge, attitude toward health care, and perceived health care benefits; 2) the enabling factors provided in the community, consisting of resources and health promotion activities; and 3) the reinforcing factors, namely getting information about health care from various media, and receiving advice and support from various individuals so to practice health care behaviors.

2. The developed model of health promotion activities included five activity plans: 1) a community-based forum for the development of health policies and practices, 2) healthy environment and happy life, 3) a strong community with a common development vision, 4) a good health promotion club, and 5) a wellness clinic. The model suitability for use was at a high level (M=4.40, SD=0.55). As a result, all activity plans should be run to meet the needs and health behaviors of the residents.
