Depression among Elderly People: Prevalence and Associated Factors

The purposes of this analytic cross-sectional study were to determine the prevalence of depression as well as factors associated with depression among elderly people. Participants were 1,692 older adults of 60 years old and over, all registered in a Health Promoting Hosptial in Pa-phayom District, Phatthalung Province. Data was gathered between January and March, 2018. Research tools were the demographic factors questionnaire, as well as the 2 questions (2Q) depression screening test and the 9 questions (9Q) depression srceening test. Demographic factors and prevalence of depression were analyzed by descriptive statistics, while factors associated with depression among elderly were analyzed by multiple logistic regression analysis.
Results showed that the prevalence of depression among elderly people was at the 8.63 percent level. Furthermore, it was found that 80+ years old who had underlying diseases (ORadj=2.00, 95%CI: 1.20-3.34) and who did not participate in the activities of the elderly club (ORadj=1.96, 95%CI: 1.26-3.03) were statistical significantly associated with depression (ORadj=14.40, 95%CI: 6.20-33.46) (P<0.05). Results suggest that health professional should closely promote surveillance of the eldely people underlying diseases who are aged over 80 years. In addition, they should be encouraged to attend activities of elderly club in order to prevent depression among elderly people.
