This cross-sectional survey research aimed to study attitudes towards sexual diversity, attitudes towards gender equality, and behavior towards sexual diversity, as well as to assess the correlations between attitudes towards sexual diversity, attitudes towards gender equality, and behaviors towards sexual diversity. The sample was 392 students from Lampang Rajabhat University, selected by multistage sampling. Research instrument was a questionnaire divided in four parts: general information, attitudes towards sexual diversity, attitudes towards sexual equality, and behaviors towards sexual diversity. Questionnaire sections yielded Cronbach’s alpha coefficients reliability scores of 0.74, 0.88 and 0.76, respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Correlations were tested by Chi-square and Spearman's rank correlation.
The results showed that most of students (52.6%) had attitudes towards sexual diversity at a high level (M=35.69, SD=5.57). Attitude towards gender equality (46.2%) was also at a high level (M=34.56, SD=4.89), while behavior towards sexual diversity was mostly (52.3%) at a moderate level (M=32.84, SD=5.50). After testing, the correlation factors (age, year of study, income, type of residence, sexual identity, and having sex in the last month) were significantly associated with attitudes towards sexual diversity. Both attitudes towards sexual diversity and attitudes towards gender equality were significantly associated with behaviors towards sexual diversity at the 0.01 level (r's=0.17, 0.18).
Therefore, university should have a policy to promote the acceptance of LGBTQ student groups, advocating for more human rights and equality, so to promote an LGBTQ friendly atmosphere in the university. Media of prevention of sexual transmitted diseases in a specific group like LGBT are also recommended. Future study should have in-depth interviews with the LGBTQ student group members for more information and concern.
