This qualitative research aimed to study the experiences of parents and grand-parents caring for their children with nephrotic syndrome. Husserl's phenomenology concept was applied. The informants were 15 parents or grandparents of children with nephrotic syndrome who had experiences during hospitalization. The tool used to guide the interview was a semi-structured questionnaire. Questions were open-ended, and flexible. They were clear and easy to understand and examined by 3 experts in order to verify the correctness and appropriateness. The questionnaire was adjusted as recommended by the experts. Data was collected through in-depth interviews. Tape recordings and verbatim transcription were used. The data was analyzed using Colaizzi’s method.
Findings were divided into six themes: 1) parental care behaviors, 2) being aware of parents’ perception of illness, 3) assisting and providing feedback on care behaviors to solve problems, 4) increasing parents' confidence in fighting the disease and being hopeful, 5) building a positive relationship between the healthcare team, parents, and children, and 6) problems and obstacles encountered by the guardians.
The outcomes of this study provide better understanding about perceived experiences of those family members caring for children with nephrotic syndrome. Health personnel can use the research findings to guide their nursing practices for children with nephrotic syndrome.
