Abstract

This phenomenological research aimed to explain experiences of caregivers of psychiatric patients into home care facilities in Yala Province, in a Muslim cultural context. Participants were 12 caregivers of psychiatric patients living in Mueang Yala district. They were recruited by purposive sampling method from April to July, 2020. Data were collected by using individual semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using content analysis. To establish credibility of the research, Lincoln and Guba criteria were used, along with confirmability of data of member as well as peer debriefing.

The results were classified into 4 main issues: 1) perceptions of family psychiatric illness, 2) illness as God’s testฺ, 3) learning from taking care, and 4) important helps.

The results of this study provided a better understanding of caregivers’ experiences in caring for psychiatric patients at home in a Muslim cultural context. Health workers can use the research findings as a basis for mental health care for patients and caregivers in accordance with context, culture, beliefs, and lifestyle, as well as a way to develop a psychiatric patients’ home care model for caregivers or as a guideline.
