This quasi-experimental research with a two-group pretest-posttest design was carried out to investigate and promote self-esteem of grade 9 students in boarding schools under the royal patronage in 3 southern border provinces. The research objectives were to: 1) compare self-esteem of students before and after joining a growth group training program of twelve 90-minute sessions; 2) compare self-esteem of students between the students who participated in the growth group training program and those who attended regular school activities; and 3) compare the students' self-esteem in pre-and post-group and follow-up periods of the experimental and control groups. The sample was 48 students in grade 3, attending boarding schools under the royal patronage in 3 southern border provinces. Simple random sampling was used from the 25th percentile downwards. There were 12 students in the experimental group and 12 into the control group, for a total of 24 students. The research instruments were the self-esteem measure questionnaire, adapted from the student edition of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory - School Form, as well as the growth group program. Both yielded an alpha Cronbach coefficient of 0.96. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired t-test, independent t-test, and ANOVA. The results showed as follows.
1. After the students joined the growth training program, the mean of their self-esteem was significantly higher than before participating in the training program (p<.001).
2. In the pre-trial period, the mean of self-esteem among experimental and control groups was not different (p>.05). In the post-trial period, the mean of self-esteem among experimental and control groups was significantly different (p<.001).
3. In the experimental group, the mean scores for students' self-esteem were significantly different (p<.01) between the pre-trial, the post-test and the follow-up periods. There was a statistical significant influence on the self-esteem score at the .001 level.
In conclusion, the growth group training program should be used in psychological studies on human development in various dimensions such as positive thinking, and the promotion of leadership etc.
