Abstract

This phenomenological study aimed to describe the experiences of nurses and teams on behavior limitation of psychiatric patients by using physical restraint. Twelve informants who were working in a psychiatric ward from a tertiary hospital in Southern Thailand were recruited by using purposive sampling method. Data were collected by using in-depth interviews with a recording machine, as well as observations and field notes that enabled concurrent data validation with methodological triangulation. Data were analyzed by using inductive method.

Results revealed that six themes were emerged in relation with experiences of nurses and the use of physical restraint techniques to limit psychiatric patients’ behaviors: 1) safety and proper treatments, 2) patient’s rights, 3) family participation and consent, 4) impact of physical restraint on patients by nursing teams, 5) clear role and duty performance, and 6) encountered problems.

Per findings, using physical restraint should be performed with standards that would   decrease complications. An effective nursing care guideline for physical restraint must be developed.
