Abstract

The objectives of this research and development were to: 1) examine teenage pregnancy   situation as well as teenage pregnancy prevention guidelines for vocational college students, 2)   develop a new teenage pregnancy prevention model, using Halal principles, and 3) evaluate effectiveness of the developed model. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Sample was   30 students. Focus group discussion were conducted among 50 informants. Research   instruments were the prevention of pregnancy model, and sexual behavior of student questionnaire. Validity of questionnaire was tested using item-objective congruence Index, yielding a value of 0.86. Reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, yielding a value of .92.  Data were analyzed using Paired t-test. Results showed as follows.

Most of teenage pregnancies in female teenagers in the area were caused by lack of understanding that teenage pregnancy can be prevented in a Muslim cultural context. Other factors are involved, such as watching pornography, drugs and alcohol consumption, lack of adequate sex education, parents' lack of listening, as well as the absence of communication within the family about sex. The prevention of teenage pregnancy model on sexual behaviors, inspired by the Halal principles and motivation, included sex education, life skills, the halal sexual positions, and counseling. Inappropriate sexual behaviors level among students in Yala vocational college was lower than before using the model with statistical significance (p<.001).

Therefore, the developed model can be used in families, communities and educational institutions to prevent teenage pregnancy, and inappropriate sexual behavior of adolescents in a Muslim cultural context.
