Abstract

This survey research aimed to study the use of local wisdom for health promotion and healing the elderly in Sena district of Ayutthaya province. Informants who used local wisdom for healing and health promotion among the elderly were selected by purposive sampling. Ten volunteer informants were selected accordingly with the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The results showed that using the local wisdom consisted either in using a single herb, some herb formulas, traditional medicines, or inventions. Thirteen single herbs were used for healing or health promotion, including Boesenbergia rotunda, Allium sativum, Curcuma longa, and Zingiber cassumunar. Four herb formulas were used, for example a formula for the relief of menopause symptoms, or formula for lowering the fat level in blood vessels (Tinospora crispa L. formula). Several traditional medicine formulas were used, including a formula for paralysis, a Benjakul formula, and some inventions, such as coconut shell stepping, and herbal compress ball. This study provides useful information on the local wisdom usage for healing and promoting the elderly health. This information also can be used for developing innovations from local wisdom.
