Factors Predicting Gestational Weight Gain among Overweight Pregnant Women
Keywords:
Gestational Weight Gain, Predicting Factors, Overweight Pregnant WomenAbstract
This predictive research aimed to study gestational weight gain (GWG) and predictors of GWG among 174 overweight pregnant women.Data were collected using demographic determinants, food consumption behavior (FCB), and physical activity (PA) for overweight pregnant women questionnaires. The reliability values of the FCB and PA questionnaire obtained Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of .75 and .71, respectively. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and stepwise multiple regression.
The findings showed that participants with adequate, inadequate, and excessive GWG were 32.8%, 10.3%, and 56.9%, respectively. GWG among this particular group ranged from 0.14 to 2.10 kg/wk. The mean weekly GWG was 0.52 (SD=0.33). Gestational age at the first antenatal care visit and FCB could predict 26.60 (adj. R2=.266, p=.005) and the standard error of the estimate was .2851. Gestational age at the first antenatal care visit was the strongest predictor for GWG of overweight pregnant women (Beta=.477). While the FCB had a negative effect on GWG (Beta=-.169).
Per findings of the current study, overweight women should control pre-pregnancy weight within the recommended range before getting pregnant. Moreover, they should be advised individually on the recommendation for GWG management and promotion of healthy food consuming behavior.
