Disaster Preparedness Behaviors: Causal Factors, and Research Avenues
Keywords:
Disaster Preparedness Behavior, Causal Factors, Research AvenuesAbstract
This article aimed to present the concept of disaster preparedness behaviors, as well as its components, causal factors, and research avenues. Disaster preparedness behaviors represents the expression of a person's actions, thoughts, feelings, attitudes towards prevention of disasters. Practice in preparation to learn or to do things or to plan before proceeding with activities to be ready both physical and mental actions or actions of the activities of the person who had proceeded before the disaster occurred. Goal is to ensure that they will have a sufficiently effective response to the impact so their actions can reduce the impact and danger from disaster. Main objective is to facilitate effective responses in emergencies by having the person aware and prepared in advance or immediately before the threat occurs for protection. There are 5 components of disaster preparedness: 1) plan, 2) organizing system/procurement, 3) training, 4) rehearsal, 5) evaluation and improvement. For the causal factors of disaster preparedness behaviors, several findings are suggested for further research, including knowledge of disasters, preparedness, perceptions of violence, and the impact of disaster's response in the risk perception and mitigation. As a conclusion, relevant departments must have knowledge transfer communication channels to provide people with disaster preparedness.
