Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aimed to study self-care experiences of pregnant women with hypertensive disorders at one regional hospital in Southern Thailand. Fifteen participants were recruited by purposive sampling method. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews, and analyzed using content analysis. To establish credibility of the research, Lincoln and Guba criteria were used, along with confirmability of data from member checking as well as peer debriefing.

Findings showed that self-care experience of pregnant women with hypertensive disorders included the following themes: 1) perception that having hypertensive disorders may affect mother and child health, 2) behavioral modification towards health care, namely learning to adapt behaviors with existing health problems, and 2  following the advices of the health personnel team, 3) concern for mental health care, including stress and anxiety management  and restraint with a child, and 4) self-care support from husband and relatives, as well as having access to useful resources.

The findings should be remembered as helpful information for healthcare providers in nursing care planning and caring for pregnant women with hypertensive disorders in order to prevent the severity and progression of the disease.
