Abstract

This mixed method research aimed to study the correlations between levels of perceived self-efficacy and fall prevention behavior, and to elaborate guidelines for fall prevention among older persons in Yala municipality, Yala province. Research was divided in 2 phases. First phase consisted in studying levels of perceived self-efficacy among 370 older persons. Stratified random sampling was applied. Instrument was a questionnaire about perceived self-efficacy, and fall prevention behaviors in older persons. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Second phase was the development of a guideline regarding fall prevention among older persons. Sample consisted of 10 older persons who were selected by purposive sampling. Data was collected by focus group, in-depth interviews, and   content analysis.

Results of research showed that overall level of perceived self-efficacy (M=2.55, SD=0.32)   and fall preventing behaviors (M=2.35, SD=0.41) among older persons were respectively at the high level, with a moderately positive correlation statistically significant at the .01 level (r=.611). Guidelines for preventing falls among the older persons could prevent most of falls. But more self-care must be taken and it is important to adjust living conditions, notably by providing care for the older persons. Educating the older persons about fall prevention following the context of the area and the local culture of the older persons are important.

Therefore, related organizations should focus on promoting self-awareness about prevention of falls, risk prevention, and environmental management to prevent falls among older persons.
