Factors Associated with Depression among Pregnant Teenagers

This descriptive correlational study on depression in teenage pregnant women aimed to examine the relationship among Life event, Family support, Marital relationship, Self-esteem and depression. The samples of the study consisted of 298 teenage pregnant women in Songkhla Province. The instrument used to collect the data was a set of questionnaires including 6 parts: 1) demographic data, 2) life events, 3) family support, 4) marital relationship, 5) self-esteem, and 6) depression. Validity of the whole questionnaire was confirmed by three experts. The questionnaire parts 3, 4, and 6 had Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of .91, .86, and .93, respectively, while the questionnaire parts 2 and 5 had test-retest reliability of .86 and .82, respectively. Data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s product moment correlation. Results were as follows.
1. The level of depression among teenage pregnant women was at moderate level (M=18.86, SD=11.17).
2. Life event, marital relationship, and self-esteem were statistically significant associated with depression among teenage pregnant women (r=.48, r=-.38 and r=-.39, p<.01 respectively).
3. Family support was statistically significant associated with depression among teenage pregnant women (r=-.28, p<.01)
Findings of this study could be used as basic information for preventing and taking care of teenage pregnant women so they have good mental and physical health.
