Factors Influencing the Success of a 6-Month Exclusive Breastfeeding Period among Working Mothers
Keywords:

This predictive study aimed to examine the success of a 6-month exclusive breastfeeding period among working mothers, and the factors of influence for it. Purposive sampling was used to select 160 working mothers, having a child of 6 months to 1 year of age in Trang province. There were seven research instruments: 1) the demographic data questionnaire, 2) the Breastfeeding Knowledge Assessment (BKA), 3) the Attitude Assessment Regarding Breastfeeding (AARB), 4) the Breastfeeding Intention Assessment (BIA), 5) the Family Support Assessment (FSA), 6) the Nurse Support Assessment (NSA), as well as 7) the Employer and Colleagues Support Assessment (ECSA). All assessments were content validated by three experts, yielding content validity indices (CVI) of .87, .90, .85, .93, .87, and .93, respectively. The reliability of the Breastfeeding Knowledge Assessment (BKA) was tested using Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20), yielding a value of .70. The reliabilities of the AARB, BIA, FSA, NSA, and ECSA yielded Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of .83, .85, .90, .83, and .93, respectively. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation and logistic regression.
Results showed that only 40 percent of working mothers from the sample used exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months. The analysis results with logistic regression statistics found that knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding, attitude towards exclusive breastfeeding, intention of exclusive breastfeeding, family social support, social support from nurses, and social support from employers and colleagues could explain 20% of variance (Nagelkerke R2 = .20, p < .05) in 6-month exclusive breastfeeding among working mothers. However, only family social support (OR = 1.067, 95% CI [1.003, 1.135]) and social support from nurses (OR = 1.088, 95%CI [1.001, 1.183]) were significant predictors. Therefore, health personnel should apply family social support and social support from nurses as a guideline for promoting the success of a 6 months exclusive breastfeeding period among working mothers.
