Abstract

This experimental study aimed to examine red leaves terminalia catappa linn.(Indian almond leaves) extract, in order to describe 1) color change reaction, precipitation, and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), as well as 2) the antifungal actions using the Agar disc diffusion method and Broth Microdilution, as well as maceration of dried leaves with 95% ethanolic liquid. The Candida species consisted of C. albican ATCC 90028, C. glabrata TISTR 5006, C. kefyr TISTR 5270, C. krusei TISTR 5256, and C. tropicalis TISTR 5045. Data were collected from December 2018 to August 2019, and were analyzed using mean, standard deviation of Rf, and inhibition zone. Results were as follows.

1. Terminalia Catappa Linn.red leaves were found to have 7 phytochemical components, namely: anthraquinones, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, as well as gallic acid and quercetin, revealed in the extract of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC).

2. Antifungal activity study of extract showed that the mean inhibition zone were 1.36, 1.10, and 1.03 mm (SD=0.11, 0.05, 0.30 mm against C. glabrata, C. Kefry and C.Krusei, respectively). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were 7.81, 31.25 and 62.50 mg/ml, respectively, while the Minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were 125, 125 and >125 mg/ml against C. glabrata , C. Kefry and C. Krusei, respectively.

Per findings, the crude extract of Terminalia Catappa Linn. red leaves could be developed as an alternative anti-candidiasis product.
