Keywords:
Collaboration Practice, Operating Room, University HospitalsAbstract
The purpose of this research was to identify the components of an effective collaboration practice in operating rooms of university hospitals in Thailand, using the Delphi technique. Participants were 23 experts, divided into 2 groups: 1) practitioners with experience working with multidisciplinary care in the operating room, and 2) health science academics with expertise in multidisciplinary practice. The research methodology consisted of 3 phases. In the first phase, the 23 highly experienced experts in collaboration practice were asked to describe the exact components of an effective and structured collaboration practice in operating rooms from university hospitals in Thailand, by using an open-ended questionnaire. During the second phase, data were collected by rating scales questionnaire. All items were ranked by order of importance. In the last phase, data were analyzed using median and interquartile range, and then used to develop a new version of questionnaire. The new version was sent to experts in order to assess the previously ranked items. Data were analyzed again, still using median & interquartile range, to summarize the study.
Results showed that components of collaboration practice in operating room in Thai university hospitals comprised 7 components and 43 elements as follows: 1) ethics (5 elements), 2) role clarification and responsibility (6 elements), 3) interprofessional communication (8 elements), 4) team functioning (7 elements), 5) situation awareness leading to conflict (6 elements), 6) client-centered care (4 elements), and 7) collaboration leadership (7 elements).
It is recommended that operating room administrators, health personnel or related organizations use these research results as a guideline so to develop effective collaboration practices. Research results can also be used as a guideline for assessment, development and improvement in terms of collaboration in operating rooms.
