Abstract

The objective of this phenomenological qualitative research was to describe meanings and components of innovative leadership among head nurses in community hospitals.  Snowballing sampling was used to select 10 head nurses into community hospitals who had experience in nursing administration and nursing innovation.  Data was collected through in-depth interviews, and then analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. Triangulation method was used to verify the qualitative data.

Research findings were classified into two parts: meanings, and components.  According to the head nurses, the meanings of innovative leadership were 1) new knowledge and ideas, 2) new technological administration, 3) new administrative design, 4) courage to manage changes, 5) willingness to take risks, and 6) positive thinking. The components of innovative leadership, as stated by the head nurses, were: 1) innovative vision, 2) inspiring leadership, 3) information technology service management, 4) skills in literature reviewing, 5) innovation design, 6) innovation team management, 7) encouraging creativity in their followers, and 8) innovative decision-making ability.

Results of this research indicate that nursing innovative leadership is new knowledge that needs to be further studied quantitatively and quantitatively for clear understanding of nursing administration.
