This academic article aimed to provide the proper type of measurement and validation methods, including social science research instruments, as well as correct psychometric properties reporting methods.
A simple survey was undertaken to identify the use of social science research instruments and instrument validation from 5 randomly selected journals that were published in science and technology journals from Thai-Journal Citation Index group I (TCI I) database during 2017 – 2019. From 100 quantitative research articles, 239 questionnaires were used (excluding the part of demographic data). Findings were: 1) 71.97% of research articles reported the validation method and psychometric properties incompletely and incorrectly, 2) validity testing was not reported for 28.87% of articles, 3) for 7% of articles, validity testing did not cover all measurement instruments used, 4) 3% reported IOC wrongly, by using average of total scale, 5) reliability testing was not reported in 16.69% of articles, 6) for 1.67% of articles, reliability testing did not cover all measurement instruments used, and 7) there was a misapplication of reliability testing in 0.84% of selected articles.
Lack of psychometric testing and underreporting were found in social science research instruments used, in particular for validity testing. Thus, psychometric testing and reporting of validation are provided in this article as guidance for using.
