Competencies in Rational Use of Antibiotics among Nursing Students in Prachomklao College of Nursing, Phetchaburi Province

The purpose of this descriptive research was: 1) to study the level of competencies in rational use of antibiotics among nursing students, and 2) to compare their levels of competencies in rational use of antibiotics classified by year of study, and their levels of academic achievement. Sample was 173 nursing students from the Prachomklao College of Nursing in Phetchaburi Province. Participants were selected by stratified random sampling, based on the number of students of each year. The research tool was a questionnaire regarding knowledge, attitude, and skills of rational use of antibiotics. Data were analyzed using average, standard deviation, Bonferonni’s method, and one-way ANOVA. The findings indicated as follows.
1. Most of nursing students (64.16%) had a low level of knowledge about rational use of antibiotics. Skill was at a moderate level (M=2.54, SD=0.47), but attitude was at a high level (M=3.89, SD=0.48).
2. Nursing students with different year levels had different levels of competence in rational use of antibiotics with a statistically significant difference (p=0.002). And nursing students with different academic achievement levels had different level of competence with a statistically significant difference (p= 0.024).
