Abstract

This research aimed to study factors related to the resilience quotient among elderly with a chronic disease in rural area of Nakhon Ratchasima. The sample consisted in 135 elderly people with diabetes and/or hypertension, aged 60 years or more. Data were collected by interviewing, using questionnaires for personal information, perception of family relationships, perception of activities in daily living, and resilience quotient. The reliability of the instruments, analyzed by Cronbach coefficient, yielded .80, .82 and .80, respectively. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient, and Chi-Square test.

Result showed that the following factors were not correlated with resilience quotient: age, sex, income, complications, marital status, perceived severity of the chronic disease, and caregivers (p>.01). However, perception of family relationships, and perception of the activity of daily living, were significantly correlated, though low positively, with resilience quotient (p<.01).

So this research suggests that promotion of resilience quotient in elderly with chronic disease should involve family relationships and activity of daily living.
