This participatory action research aimed to: 1) produce a need assessment report on first aid care for emergency patients from people in Dornkaew Community, Chiang Mai Province, 2) develop a training curriculum on first aid care for emergency patients from that community, 3) assess the effectiveness of the curriculum. Study was divided in 3 phases. Phase 1 was to produce a need assessment report on first aid care for emergency patients from Dornkaew. Focus group discussion technique was used, as well as purposive sampling among 26 community leaders and health personnel. Research tools used were a focus group discussion guideline, which was corrected and approved by 3 experts, then validated by content analysis method. Phase 2 was to develop a first aid care curriculum, by applying the focus group conclusion from phrase 1, including reviewing literature. Suitability, as well as possibility and benefits for participants, were verified by 3 experts. Phase 3 consisted in evaluating the effectiveness of the curriculum. Purposive sampling was used to select 30 village public health volunteers and 5 teachers who were in charge of first aid care in Dornkaew Community schools.
Research tools consisted of a knowledge pre-test and post-test forms on first aid care for emergency patients, a first aid care skill assessment form for emergency patients, and a satisfaction assessment form. All were verified for content validity by 3 experts and reliability of the content of knowledge assessment and skill assessment forms were analyzed by Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR 20), yielding reliability values of .76 and .79, respectively. Reliability of the satisfaction assessment form was examined using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, yielding a value of .80. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. The research findings were as follows.
1. There were many emergency health problems and patients in Donkaew Community, but the helpers did not have the right skills on first aid. Therefore, there was a need to develop an emergency first aid training curriculum for the community.
2. Emergency first aid training curriculum included: 1) a knowledge pre-test on first aid for emergency patients before the training, 2) a training on first aid for emergency patients, 3)a practice of first aid skills on emergency patients, 4) a knowledge post-test on first aid on emergency patients after the training, and giving suggestions. This training curriculum was for a total time of 8 hours.
3. First aid care for emergency patients knowledge was remarkably increased, at the statistical significant level of .001, while the score for first aid care to emergency patient skills after training was 75.80 percent (higher than 60 percent, which was criterion score), and satisfaction assessment of the training participants was at the “high” level.
First aid care for emergency patients training should be conducted continuously by expanding the target group to all of the village public health volunteers, teachers, and students in Dornkaew Community and the rest of all Communities in Maerim District. The emergency care equipment should be available in order to effectively give emergency care for people in the community.
