Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to examine the effects of a   cognitive-stimulation program on memory and ability to perform activities of daily living among older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Sample were 40 older adults with mild cognitive impairment living in Palian district of Trang Province. They were purposively selected, and assigned into an experimental group (n=20) or a control group (n=20). The experimental group received the cognitive-stimulation program, while the control group received routine care. Data were collected between January and April, 2019. The cognitive-stimulation program included 14 sessions (45 minutes/session). And it was conducted for 7 weeks (2 sessions/week). Data were collected using Mini-Mental State Examination Thai 2002, Thai Geriatric Depression Scale, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and Barthel ADL Index. The content validity index (CVI) was equal to 0.8. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and Mann-Whitney U test.

The results revealed that the experimental group had mean scores of memory and ability to perform daily living activities significantly higher after receiving the cognitive-stimulation program than before intervention (p= .01). The experimental group who received the cognitive stimulation program had mean scores of memory and ability to perform the activities of daily living significantly higher than participants in control group (p=.01, .001 repectively).

In conclusion, the cognitive-stimulation program can be used to promote the memory ability and daily activities of older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
