Abstract

The aim of this quasi-experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design was to study the effects of a preparation program on self-care behaviors among school-aged children with acute leukemia who received chemotherapy during the initial stage of treatment. Sample was 30 children aged 6 to 12 years who were diagnosed with leukemia during the initial stage, and then admitted to the pediatric department at a tertiary hospital in the North Eastern Region of Thailand. Research instruments were: 1) a school-age pre-program for acute leukemia patients treated with chemotherapy at the initial treatment stage (validity equal to 1.00), as well as 2) an interview questionnaire for measuring the effectiveness of the program (validity 0.93). Reliability was confirmed by using Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.84). Data were analyzed and presented in frequency, percentage, means, standard deviation, and paired t-test.  Results were as follows.

1. The preparation program consisted in five activities: 1) teaching, 2) guidance, 3) support, 4) environmental management, and 5) monitoring and evaluation.

2. The mean score of self-care behaviors after conducting the program was statistically significant higher than mean scores before conducting the program (< 0.01).

The program promoted patients to gain the suitable health information leading to better self-care behavior.
