Factors Related to Health Literacy in Prevention of Hypertension among Group at Risk in Samran Sub-District, Muaeng District, Khon Kaen Province

This cross-sectional descriptive research aimed to identify the health literacy level among 285 patients at risk for hypertension in a Khon Kaen City district, and the relationship between prevention of hypertension disease and health literacy. Data were collected using a questionnaire which reliability was tested, yielding 0.87 level. That instrument was also analyzed, using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and Fisher’s Exact test. Results indicated the following.
1. Sample had a good health literacy level (43.51%). The access to health information and health services was at a good level (53.02%). Knowledge, and understanding were at the highest level (36.14%). Communication skills (39.63%), decision-making skills (44.73%), self-management (41.28%), and media literacy (40.91%) were also at a good level.
2. Education level (OR=3.88, 95 % CI = 1.77 to 9.39; p-value <0.001), learning promoting system (OR = 3.38, 95 % CI = 1.97 to 5.80; p-value <0.001), the influence of family and friends (OR=2.89 95 % CI = 1.67 to 5.01; p-value <0.001), health service (OR=2.75, 95 % CI = 1.36 to 5.61; p-value = 0.002), monthly income (OR=2.53, 95 % CI = 1.38 to 4.82; p-value = 0.001), public media (OR=2.41, 95 % CI = 1.39 to 4.20; P-value = 0.001) and age (OR=1.79, 95 % CI = 1.07 to 3.05; p-value = 0.019) were all significantly associated with the health literacy level of studied population in prevention of hypertension (p-value <05).
This study suggests that activities or projects should be conducted to promote knowledge and understanding of self-management behaviors and media literacy in preventing hypertension.
