Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of the modified Bhadrasana pose along with cold compressions on the duration of pain, and pain coping behavior during active phase of labor in primiparous women. The sample was primiparous women who delivered at a regional hospital centers in Southern Thailand between May and August, 2019. The 60 participants were selected by purposive sampling technique, and were assigned into an experimental group and a control group. Each group was 30 participants. The experimental group received the modified Bhadrasana pose and cold compression when cervix dilatation was 4 centimeter and effacement was 80% and above until full dilatation, and this, every 1 hour for a duration of 15 minutes. In contrast, the control group received only routine care procedures. Research instruments were the Handbook of modified Bhadrasana pose and cold compressions. Data collection instruments were: 1) a form on personal information, 2) a record form indicating the time of giving the modified Bhadrasana pose, cold compressions and duration of active phase of labor, as well as 3) the pain coping behavior during the active phase of labor. Content validity of the instruments were validated by three experts in obstetrics. Reliability was tested using Cronbach’s coefficient alpha yielding valued of .86 and .84, respectively. Data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test. Results showed as follows.

1. The duration of pain in the active phase of labor (t=5.76, p<.001) was lower in the experimental group (M=2.37, SD=1.12) than a control group (M=4.21, SD=1.06) at a statistically significant level.

2. The pain coping behavior during active phase of labor (M=12.37, SD=2.09) was more proper in the experimental group (t=14.67, p<.001) than in the control group (M=3.47, SD=2.83) at a statistically significant level.

These findings indicate that the effects of modified the Bhadrasana pose and cold compressions could shorten the duration of pain during active phase of labor and help  parturient woman to properly cope with pain behavior during active phase of labor.
